Sex Ed for All: The Impact of Planned Parenthood’s Evidence-Based Sex Education

May 13, 2024

Working for a mission-based organization like Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest (PPPSW) offers more than just a job—it provides a pathway to making a tangible impact on the health and well-being of the communities we serve.

One of our key initiatives is providing evidence-based and accessible sex education programs that support individuals to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health. We don’t just disseminate information; we provide comprehensive education and support to help people take control of their reproductive futures and confidently navigate complex issues.

Our sex education experts offer in-person and virtual presentations, workshops, and resources that cover all aspects of sexual and reproductive health. We tailor our programs to specific audiences, including students, youth-serving professionals, parents/caregivers, and community members, to ensure that everyone receives the information they need.

We are proud to provide reliable information and training to youth-serving professionals, including teachers and social workers, helping them become trusted resources for the young people they engage with. This strengthens the support network for young people and ensures that accurate, age-appropriate information is being shared, myths are dispelled, and healthy behaviors are promoted.

For parents and caregivers, we offer guidance and tips to help facilitate meaningful conversations about sex and sexual health. We provide the tools and confidence they need to support the healthy development of the children in their care, leading to better-informed and more empowered young people. Our community-based education programs deliver tailored information to youth and adults, addressing the unique needs of particular demographics and adapting content to the cultural context of specific communities.

You can find much of this content via Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest’s digital platform Sex Ed To-Go, which offers free online courses in both English and Spanish for students, parents/caregivers, and teachers.

We also offer peer programs that give young people the knowledge and skills to become informed sexual and reproductive health resources for their peers. By training and empowering youth to be leaders and advocates within their communities, we create a multiplier effect where our education efforts are amplified through peer-to-peer interactions.
